Kids Hotel Welcome Bag Ideas + What to Include for Family-Friendly Travel

Traveling with kids always holds a mix of things—the excitement of somewhere new, the disruption of routine, and the quiet hope that everything just goes smoothly.

And over time, I’ve found that one small, simple thing can shift those first moments in the best way.

A welcome bag.

Nothing elaborate. Nothing Pinterest-perfect.
Just something thoughtful waiting for them when we arrive.

Because sometimes, the smallest gestures create the biggest sense of comfort.

Why I Started Making Welcome Bags

The first moments in a hotel room can feel a little off for kids.
New space, different smells, unfamiliar beds.

And while we adjust quickly as adults, kids often need a little help settling in.

I started putting together small welcome bags as a way to bridge that gap—to give them something familiar, something fun, and something that felt just for them.

And now, it’s become one of our favorite little travel traditions.

What I Put in a Kids Hotel Welcome Bag

I like to keep things simple and intentional.
A mix of comfort, activity, and a little bit of fun.

Not more—just enough.

Here’s what I usually include:

Schoolager / Five year old

Aurora® Adorable Mini Flopsie™ Maxamoose™ Stuffed Animal

Poncho Towels by Lulumoon

Waterproof Bag – At first glance it is sturdy and I like the adjustable straps (I wanted to make one, but I ran out of time.)

Swim Goggles (I got a set of two on sale last year that have not been used yet. Here they are on Amazon.)

Pajamas

Stainless Steel water bottle (from home)

Poncho Towel

Stainless Steel Sippy Cup

Pajamas

Keep It Simple (This Matters Most)

It can be easy to overthink something like this.

But it doesn’t need to be elaborate to be meaningful.

This isn’t about creating the perfect gift bag.
It’s about creating a small moment of comfort in a new place.

A way to slow things down when everything feels a little new and unfamiliar.

When to Set It Up

If I can, I like to set the bags out before the kids walk into the room.

On the bed.
Or lined up neatly on a chair.

So when they come in, it’s the first thing they see.

It shifts the energy right away—from “where are we?” to something that feels a little more fun, a little more familiar.

A Simple Way to Make Travel Feel Special

There are so many things about traveling with kids that we can’t control.

But this is one small thing we can.

And it doesn’t take much—just a little intention, a few thoughtful items, and a desire to make the moment feel a bit softer for them.

Because in the end, it’s not really about the bag.

It’s about creating small moments of comfort and joy—wherever you are.

The kind they’ll remember.
The kind that feel rooted and real.

Motherhood isn’t about perfection—it’s about creating moments that feel rooted and real.
